Matty James, once a promising talent at Manchester United, has shared his inspiring story of resilience and rebirth. After being released from Bristol City in 2024, the midfielder found himself facing an uncertain future at the age of 32. But just when things seemed bleak, Wrexham swooped in, offering him a short-term deal that proved to be a lifeline.
James quickly became an integral part of Wrexham, earning an 18-month contract extension after playing a pivotal role in their journey to a third consecutive promotion. He made 33 appearances, scored twice, and helped the club secure their place back in the second tier of English football. James couldn’t be more grateful to Wrexham, saying, “It means everything to me. The opportunity to keep playing, especially in front of my kids, is something I cherish deeply.”
Reflecting on his journey, James opens up about the emotional rollercoaster of being without a club, emphasising the invaluable support Wrexham provided. His gratitude shines through as he shares the joy of showcasing his skills to his children, ensuring they witness their dad doing what he loves best.
The 34-year-old remains fitter than ever, dismissing the idea that age can hold him back. “I feel amazing, possibly better than in my early 20s,” he reveals, highlighting his dedication to staying fit and proving doubters wrong.
Wrexham, invigorated by the backing of fans worldwide, continues to surge under the spotlight, buoyed by the incredible journey captured in the hit series “Welcome to Wrexham”. With seven league games unbeaten, they’re setting their sights high, with James keen to repay the faith shown in him. As Wrexham prepares to host Blackburn, James embodies the club’s fighting spirit, determined to write more chapters in this fairy tale revival.
