Despite efforts by dedicated volunteers and marine experts, and even using water from the nearby Sea Shanty cafe to keep the creature hydrated, the young whale’s injuries were too severe. Reports indicate she had injuries from a potential live stranding on a sharp reef and other marks that suggested she had not been faring well on her own.

In a difficult decision, vets determined that euthanasia was the kindest option to end her suffering. It’s a stark reminder of the challenges marine life faces and the unpredictability of our seas. The whale, believed to have been a maternally dependent calf or recently weaned, highlights the sensitivities of young marine mammals.

Thanks go out to the quick-thinking public, BDMLR medics, and local coastguard rescue teams from Holyhead and Rhosneigr who worked tirelessly through the night. Their swift response ensured the whale was given the best possible chance and treated with dignity.

A rare sight, pygmy sperm whales usually inhabit deep waters of temperate to tropical seas, making their UK appearances extremely uncommon. There are fewer than 20 records of them in this area, underlining just how unique this event was.

A full post-mortem will be conducted to understand more about what brought this extraordinary animal to our shores. Meanwhile, in a different incident on Anglesey, a porpoise was found dead and in poor condition on another beach, which is being looked into by local authorities.

This week’s events underscore the importance of vigilance and care for our marine wildlife as we continue to learn about and protect the incredible creatures that share our planet. 🐳💔
