The debate in Wales is heating up as Conwy Council faces criticism for removing St. George’s flags from roundabouts, resulting in negative media attention. At a meeting today, the council will review its performance, revealing that only 52.5% of media mentions are currently neutral or positive. This is a drop from previous positive scores, with the council partially blaming the flag removals for the negativity.

Conwy’s report also highlights political shifts as a factor contributing to this media slump. These changes, along with the flag removals, come on the heels of three years of council tax hikes, which have been unpopular among locals.

Councillor Louise Emery isn’t buying the report’s reasoning. She argues that the council’s unpopularity could be due to other issues like the tax increases. Emery plans to press for more clarity during the meeting.

In its defence, the council noted that “media sentiment” is a technical term used for analysing media reports, not an indicator of public opinion. A spokesperson explained that articles related to the flags were statistically not counted as positive, affecting the overall sentiment rating.
