🏉 Big News in Welsh Rugby! 🏉

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is shaking things up with a bold plan! They’re considering entering a semi-pro Super Rygbi Cymru team into the United Rugby Championship (URC) next season.

Why? Well, the WRU is in the process of reducing Wales’ professional teams from four to three. But here’s the catch—they’re contracted to enter four teams into the URC. The URC isn’t too keen on having an odd number of teams, so the WRU might just pop in a semi-pro team for the interim.

WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood admits that keeping a winding-down regional side in play would be tricky, so they’re exploring all avenues. The Super Rygbi Cymru currently features teams like Ebbw Vale, Llandovery, RGC, Newport, Cardiff RFC, Swansea, and Bridgend.
Collier-Keywood stressed that while this plan is on the table, there are still many options. They’re committed to maintaining four teams and ensuring none compete in other pro competitions until 2028.
But here’s the exciting part—URC might be expanding its horizons too! If they bring in a new team that’s both commercially savvy and strong in rugby, the WRU might not need to supply that fourth team after all. Word on the street is that teams from Georgia, Spain, and the USA are in the mix. 🌍
Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds. Who knows, we might see an international twist to the URC soon! 🌍🏉
