Hey folks, if you’ve been feeling a bit under the weather with a cold or the flu, you might have noticed some swelling in your neck or armpits. Dr Aziza Sesay from BBC Morning Live has shared some crucial info about why this could be happening.

Swollen glands, or swollen lymph nodes, are usually no big deal. They’re your body’s way of fighting off infections. Those little bean-shaped organs help filter out nasty germs and viruses, so they’re actually good guys! You’ll mostly feel them around your neck, under the chin, or in your armpits.

But here’s the kicker – while swollen lymph nodes are often harmless and go away on their own in a week or two, sometimes they can be a sign to see your GP. If the swelling sticks around for more than a couple of weeks, feels hard, doesn’t move, or is getting bigger, it might be time to get it checked out. Especially if you’re also experiencing night sweats, a persistent fever, or lumps above or below the collarbone.

Sometimes, swollen nodes can indicate something more serious like cancer, particularly non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But don’t panic just yet! It’s not likely if you simply have swollen glands. The NHS mentions other signs to keep an eye out for, like unexplained weight loss, high temperatures, or persistent itching.

So here’s what to do: Rest up, drink plenty of fluids, and head to the doctor if you’re worried. Avoid massaging the swollen area, as it might make things worse. Regularly checking your lymph nodes can help you understand what’s normal for you.
