🎄🚒 Exciting Day at Spytty Retail Park! 🚒🎄
Christmas shopping took an unexpected turn in Newport yesterday! Shoppers were ushered out of the beloved Leisure Park when a surprise fire erupted near Home Bargains. The whole area went dark as flames caused a blackout, leaving onlookers in the car park watching as heroic firefighters took charge.
South Wales Fire and Rescue has updated that the blaze began at a substation and refuse area, eventually reaching the Home Bargains building. The fire, which erupted just after 6:30 PM, led to a speedy evacuation of not only Home Bargains but also Cineworld, McDonald’s, JD Gym, Starbucks, and more.
One worker at Burger King shared the dramatic scene, noting, “There was a total blackout, and every business was evacuated. The fire spread so quickly, by the time the fire service arrived, it had reached up to the roof.”
Multiple crews, including an environmental protection unit, raced to the site, and the flames were finally extinguished by 10:30 PM. Fortunately, by Wednesday morning, business at the retail park was back to normal with all stores, including Home Bargains, open and functional.
A big shoutout to our local fire services for their speedy response and dedication! 🔥👏
Stay safe out there, everyone, and happy shopping! 🛍️✨
