🚨 Important Health Alert! 🚨

The NHS is raising awareness about some common symptoms that could be indicative of conditions affecting 25,000 people in the UK every year. We’re talking about Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, both of which lead to inflammation in the digestive system.

These conditions can cause periods of good health interrupted by flare-ups. So, if you’re facing symptoms like prolonged diarrhoea (over seven days), persistent stomach pain, bloating, blood or mucus in your stools, or unintentional weight loss, it’s time to see your GP. Remember, self-diagnosis isn’t the way to go!

The NHS advises: “Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis can mimic other conditions. Talk to your GP if you’re concerned.”
Treatment options are available, including steroids to help manage symptoms and surgery in severe cases. Less common symptoms might include a high temperature, nausea, joint pain, eye inflammation, and mouth ulcers.
Exciting news for those with Crohn’s: A new medication has been recently approved that targets inflammation in a whole new way! By focusing on IL-23, this drug helps reduce intestinal inflammation, leading to potential symptom relief and less likelihood of surgery. Check out Dr Sami’s explanation on TikTok about how it can make life a bit easier for those affected.
Remember, Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week runs from December 1 to December 7. Head over to crohnsandcolitis.org.uk for more information. Stay informed and take care! 💪
