Charlotte Hamer faced a life-changing decision to undergo a double mastectomy at just 21, calling it a ‘no-brainer’ after discovering she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases breast cancer risk. Losing her mum to breast cancer when she was only 10 left a profound impact, prompting Charlotte to take action for her health.
She got her genetic results at 19, realising that, like her mum, she carried the BRCA2 mutation. Faced with an 80% risk of developing breast cancer, Charlotte chose proactive surgery, cutting her risk down to just 4%. While the transition was daunting—going from a 32DD to flat and back to reconstructing her chest to 32E—she stayed determined.
Charlotte bravely admits her initial fears about body changes, but her resolve stemmed from her mother’s experience and her desire for a long, healthy life. “I want my future kids to never worry like I did. My boobs don’t define me,” says Charlotte, reflecting her resilient spirit.
Following complications and reconstructive surgery in November 2024, she shares that the journey helped her feel deeply connected with her mum’s struggle. Determined to support others, Charlotte and her friend Libby Pearson launched @thebrcajourney on Instagram. This community connects women worldwide, empowering them through shared experiences with the BRCA2 mutation.
“We’ve united 45 women globally, creating a supportive community,” Charlotte reveals, highlighting the powerful bonds and friendships formed. Through this platform, Charlotte aims to raise awareness and offer solace to others navigating similar journeys, proving that strength and kinship can arise from even the most challenging circumstances.
