Wales is facing a health wake-up call! 📢 Our top doctor, Professor Isabel Oliver, has highlighted a pressing need to shift towards a prevention-first approach to tackle declining life expectancy and increasing health pressures. The latest annual report raises alarms over more people, especially in deprived areas, living longer with ill health.

Did you know that about 75% of deaths under 75 in Wales could be prevented? The report shows worrying statistics about the average years of good health dropping among women, alongside rising preventable illness rates. It’s clear that prevention isn’t just important; it’s essential!

NHS Wales currently spends most of its budget on urgent health issues, with only a small fraction dedicated to prevention. Yet, public health programmes boast a return on investment of 14 to one! Imagine the health benefits if smoking rates continue to drop! We could prevent nearly 600 deaths and 2,700 hospital admissions annually. ðŸš
But that’s not all. Professor Oliver emphasises the need to expand successful strategies in tobacco control to other areas like healthy eating and exercise. Ahead of a crucial Senedd vote on the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, and with a predicted rise in long-term conditions by 2035 if no action is taken, there’s no room for complacency.
The report calls for a united effort from all levels of government and society to tackle the social and economic determinants of health. This means supporting parents, promoting vaccines, encouraging healthier choices, and more.
It’s time we recognise health as both a responsibility and a right. Let’s support initiatives that ensure longer, healthier lives for everyone in Wales. Together, we can make prevention a reality and transform our community’s health! 💪✨
