In a decision echoing community concerns, a proposal for a new energy storage unit was stopped in its tracks. Residents in Fishguard were buzzing with worry as plans emerged for a “battery box” near Ysgol Bro Gwaun secondary school. While the idea of powering 200 homes for four hours sounds electrifying, the risk to kids’ safety was a major short circuit for locals.

The town council and the public rallied together, raising red flags about its proximity to classrooms and homes. These concerns sparked enough of a debate to bring the issue to Pembrokeshire Council’s planning committee. Even though the planners initially suggested giving it the green light, they decided on a closer look after a site visit revealed more concerns.

Ben Wallace from AMP Clean Energy reassured everyone that the units, while not winning any beauty contests, are safe. He compared them to the batteries we use in phones and laptops, and with robust fire safety measures in place, he argued there was plenty of time to extinguish any flames in the “incredibly unlikely” event of a fire.

But local councillors and residents were sceptical, anxious about the potential for fire hazards, especially during school dismissal times. Councillor Pat Davies made it crystal clear, saying the plan was “a visual intrusion” and that it was brought “without any dialogue of consultation with the school”. Talk about being left in the dark!

In the end, the committee chair Cllr Mark Carter led the charge to reject the proposal, and the vote was a unanimous “no”. Seems like the community’s voice was heard loud and clear! 📢💪
