Is Wales just a backdrop for Keir Starmer? During his recent visit to Cardiff, the Prime Minister dodged key questions about his commitment to Welsh issues, like rail funding and devolution. Instead, he stuck to his script on the government’s child poverty strategy.

While attending a press event at Ely & Caerau children’s centre, which is getting £2m from the Welsh Government for a facelift, Starmer and First Minister Eluned Morgan interacted with families and media. But for the Welsh press, it was a missed opportunity to probe him on crucial matters affecting Wales. Starmer’s brief response, when challenged about devolution concerns raised by 11 Labour Senedd Members, left much to be desired.

For many in Wales, it seems the Prime Minister is more focused on using the nation as a photo-op rather than genuinely engaging with its unique needs and challenges. Are we just a backdrop, or will Starmer step up to address Welsh priorities? The jury’s still out.
