Recent research is calling for UK pedestrian crossings to be adjusted by just two seconds to make a world of difference! 🕒 Did you know that current crossing timings are too short for many older and mobility-challenged individuals? 🚶‍♀️

A collaboration of universities including Bath, Birmingham, and Exeter found that the assumed speed at crossings is 1.2 metres per second. However, the real picture is that only 1.5% of older adults with mobility issues can actually walk this fast. The study tracked 1,110 adults aged 65+, revealing their average walking speed is around 0.77 metres per second. This means crossing a typical five-metre road actually takes them over two seconds longer than the green light allows! 🏃‍♂️⏱️

Dr Max Western emphasises that this isn’t just about safety—crossing times impact independence, physical activity, and social engagement. With age often bringing reduced strength and balance, everyday tasks can turn into significant hurdles.

Professor Afroditi Stathi adds that it’s crucial our public spaces cater to everyone’s needs. By making such simple changes, we can empower older adults to stay active, engaged, and independent within their communities. 💪👵👴

The proposed solution? Adjusting crossing times to 0.7 metres per second would make roads accessible and welcoming for more people. Why should this matter? Because it promotes confidence and enhances the quality of life for those who simply need a bit more time.

It’s time to rethink how our streets serve us all. Isn’t it worth those extra seconds to ensure everyone’s safety and independence? 🙌❤️ #WalkWithUs #SaferStreets #CommunityMatters
