π¨ Important Alert for Parents! π¨

As winter sweeps across the UK, there’s been a surge in cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and bronchiolitis. Dr. Suraj Kukadia, known as Dr. Sooj online, offers vital advice on what to look out for, especially in young children and babies. π€πΆ

RSV can be just a common cold for most, but it can be quite severe for little ones under 2 years old, causing inflammation in their tiny lungs called bronchioles. This can make it hard for them to breathe. Dr. Sooj suggests familiarising yourself with how your child normally breathes for early detection of any changes. π½οΈ
The 12-hour symptom you MUST not ignore? A dry nappy. If your child hasn’t peed for 12 hours, head straight to A&E. It’s a critical symptom and signals the need for urgent care! π
Look out for these RSV symptoms:
– Runny or blocked nose
– Persistent cough
– Sneezing
– High temperature
– Irritability in babies
– Trouble feeding
– Wheezing
– Confusion in older adults
Act promptly if your child:
– Struggles to breathe
– Turns blue around the lips or tongue
– Becomes lethargic or unresponsive
Prevention tips:
1. Clean toys and surfaces regularly.
2. Keep newborns away from those with colds or flu.
3. Use and discard tissues immediately after use.
For added protection, certain groups can get a free RSV vaccine on the NHS:
– Pregnant women (28+ weeks)
– Individuals aged 75-79
– Those who turned 80 after 1 September 2024
Dr. Sooj’s message is clear β understanding and acting upon these symptoms quickly can make all the difference. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and keep our little ones safe! π
**Note: If you’re concerned about RSV or any symptoms your child is experiencing, donβt hesitate to contact your GP or NHS 111.**
Stay healthy and take care! π
