A festive fiasco is brewing in Newport as locals have dubbed their city centre’s Christmas tree one of the UK’s worst! 😬
Residents expected a grand spectacle but instead, were greeted with a tall, thin structure that isn’t even a real tree. To make things worse, its lights have been on a blink, leaving patches of darkness right in the middle. 🌲💡
Michael Enea, a local Tory campaigner, sparked the discussion online. He claims the shabby spectacle has been a hot topic in town, saying, “I’ve been lobbying for improvements in the city centre, and this tree isn’t helping. It could well be among the worst in Britain!”
Debra King and other locals have voiced their disappointment, pointing out that the new metallic design doesn’t match up to the charm of traditional firs from years past. Christine from Newport noted, “It’s only sparsely lit. Compared to the one near the Christmas funfair, it’s just not festive enough.”
There’s some comfort in the fully-lit decorations of the nearby Friars Walk shopping area, which many say does the city much prouder.
Yet, not everyone’s convinced it’s a total disaster. Shopper Steve finds a hint of festive spirit, remarking, “It makes a change for Newport. It does look nice at night when everything’s lit up.” ✨
