After almost half a century of serving scrumptious coffee and food, the beloved Alpine Coffee Shop in Betws-y-Coed is closing its doors on January 5th. Since 1976, this charming café has been more than just a spot for a cuppa; it’s been a true community hub.
Nestled by the railway station, Alpine has been a family-owned gem run by Jacha and Gwynneth Potgieter, with the kitchen managed by the amazing Sue Jones. Known for its ethical trading and eco-friendly initiatives, Alpine has proudly been a “cafe with a conscience.”
With heavy hearts, they shared the bittersweet news, expressing gratitude towards loyal patrons, new friends, and visitors. Their message to all? “Thank you for your continued support, kindness, and invaluable contributions to conservation efforts. You helped make Alpine not just a cafe, but a thriving community.”
The commitment to sustainability shone through their support of local suppliers, serving palm-oil-free products, and tireless fundraising for wildlife conservation. Memorable achievements include a 2016 Team Alpine climb up Kilimanjaro, raising over £5,300 for Ape Action Africa and Orangutan Appeal UK.
Though the cafe will bid farewell, the spirit of conservation and their famous breakfasts will live on through the Hangin’ Pizzeria. A heartfelt thanks go out to their incredible team who’ve been instrumental in the cafe’s journey, with special mentions to the foundational trio – Edna Williams, the late Alice Richard, and Sue Jones, who’s been an integral part of the Alpine family till now.
