Here’s the scoop: if you’re born on or after January 1, 2009, you’ll never legally be able to buy cigarettes. Yep, you heard that right! This law is raising the age limit year after year, aiming to snuff out smoking before it even starts for the next generations.

But that’s not all! The law is also coming down hard on how vapes and nicotine products are marketed, especially towards kids. So, expect to see less of those eye-catching flavours and flashy ads. 🍭🚫

Shops are now under tougher rules too, as new checks will ensure vaping products meet stricter standards. Trading Standards officers are getting more muscle to crack down on those dodgy illegal tobacco and vapes.

Why all the fuss? Well, smoking is still the top cause of early deaths in Wales, hitting hard in deprived communities and among those with mental health conditions. And while youth vaping has surprisingly tripled, the hope is these changes will protect young lungs from early harm. 🤞❤️

This major move has earned the backing of health groups like Cancer Research Wales and ASH Wales, branding it the biggest step in a generation for safeguarding kids from nicotine addiction. The push for these changes started back with former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and has just got the green light from the Senedd.

Deputy Welsh Government minister Sarah Murphy said it’s time for decisive action, pointing out almost 7% of secondary school pupils vape weekly. 😮

While the vote saw some opposition, the law passed with flying colours: 36 in favour, only a couple sitting on the fence, and nine against. Love it or loathe it, this new era in tobacco control is here to stay!
