Big changes could be coming to Swansea! The former HMT Sancta Maria Hospital site in Ffynone is set to be transformed into blocks of affordable flats. This intriguing proposal aims to bring new life to an area renowned for its historic Italianate villas, initially developed for the middle class. Imagine modern living spaces blending with the area’s rich heritage!

Beacon Cymru, the housing association behind this transformation, plans to build 42 flats on the site, balancing contemporary design with the charm of the classic villas. Interestingly, while the original neoclassical buildings might make way for new structures, the plan is to retain most of the mature trees and introduce additional greenery. This will include a central garden, pathways, and a new public right of way connecting Ffynone Road to Richmond Road.

The development is a blend of one, two, and three-bedroom flats, promising a mix of living options. The architects have even included belvedere features in the design, echoing the site’s historic roots and its stunning views over Swansea Bay.

Located close to the heart of Ffynone, with nearby amenities like a care home, meditation centre, and excellent transport links, the project reinvigorates the old hospital site while staying true to the area’s legacy as an aesthetically planned suburb.
The hospital has been vacant since 2021, after relocating to a new spot by Prince of Wales Dock. This project not only promises new housing opportunities but also aims to curb anti-social behaviour that arose in its absence, making it a win-win for Swansea’s community.
Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project moves forward!
