šļøāāļø Rory McIlroy: From SPOTY Snub to Favourite! š
Rory McIlroy’s year just keeps getting better! The golf superstar is now the top contender for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, despite once dismissing it as “a popularity contest.”
Earlier in 2025, McIlroy fulfilled a lifelong dream by winning The Masters, completing a career Grand Slam! He’s one of only six men ever to achieve this feat, joining the likes of Nicklaus and Woods. And now, he’s among six nominees for SPOTY, alongside other sporting greats like Lando Norris and Ellie Kildunne.
For the first time since 2014, McIlroy plans to attend the ceremony on December 18th in Salford. Reflecting on his decision, he cheekily said, “I have more chance of winning if Iām actually there.”
While McIlroy had previously been critical of the awards, it seems he’s had a change of heart this year. Is it the allure of being just the third golfer to secure this title? š¤
If he wins, not only will it give the golfing community a boost, but McIlroy will also join an elite group of Northern Irish winners like Tony McCoy and Mary Peters.
Stay tuned, as this could be a memorable moment for McIlroy and golf fans worldwide! š„³ā³ļø
