🚨 Pensions Protectors’ Day Off: North Wales’ Top Cop’s Plan 🚓

In an unexpected twist, North Wales Police Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman is set to ‘retire’ for just one day in January before jumping right back into her role. Why the brief exit? It’s all about securing her pension under the national Retire and Rehire Scheme.

Chief Constable Blakeman, a recipient of the King’s Police Medal in 2023, is taking this temporary step to prevent her pension from losing value. With the police pension scheme maxing out after 30 years, any extra service could see it diminish. So, a quick one-day ‘retirement’ on January 15th followed by reinstatement on January 17th ensures her pension stays at its peak.
During her brief absence, Deputy Chief Constable Nigel Harrison will step up as Acting Chief Constable, ensuring a smooth transition, with no disruption to operations.
Last year, West Midlands’ Chief Constable Craig Guildford took a similar step with a month-long break, also opting for the Retire and Rehire path to maintain his pension benefits.
Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin is backing Chief Constable Blakeman’s clever pension-guarding move, pending approval from the Police and Crime Panel on December 15th. He stresses that the process is cost-free for taxpayers and ensures continuous leadership.
Both Dunbobbin and Blakeman remain dedicated to keeping North Wales safe and secure. Rest assured, our local police force is as committed as ever, and this unique strategy is just a part of maintaining a powerful and efficient service for the community.
