World Champion Dart Player Consumed Daily Beer Intake Before Suffering Collapse During World Championship

Darts legend Andy Fordham, fondly nicknamed “The Viking,” was a beloved figure despite facing many personal battles. Before collapsing at the 2007 BDO World Darts Championship, Andy candidly admitted to drinking a crate of beer daily, a habit that understandably took its toll.

Fans around the world loved Fordham for his skill and charm, especially during his unforgettable 2004 victory where he triumphed over Raymond van Barneveld and Mervyn King to become world champion. However, Andy’s health was already in a precarious state, reportedly weighing 31 stone, a result of poor eating habits and excessive drinking.

His 2007 collapse led to a diagnosis of severe liver cirrhosis, a condition that was so dire it caused a minor stroke and a lengthy hospital stay. “The day I was going to play, I had to stop multiple times just to catch my breath,” Fordham once recounted. “I was in tears because I didn’t know what was wrong.”

Despite this devastating setback, Andy showed immense resilience, temporarily stepping away from the sport to focus on his health. Impressively, he shed 17 stone and returned to the darts scene, competing in both BDO and PDC events until 2018. Sadly, his health issues persisted, and he passed away in 2021 at just 59 years old due to organ failure.

Reflecting on his struggles with alcohol, Fordham said, “A crate of beer, a couple of bottles of wine, plus spirits, it added up in hindsight. I never thought a liver issue would happen to me, but it did.”

Andy’s introduction to darts came through a spontaneous decision to fill in for a friend’s team, igniting his passion for the game amidst a lively atmosphere of laughter and, inevitably, drinks. As he rose in the sport, nerves and the pressures of fame only intensified his drinking habits, making any occasion justifiable for a drink.

Fordham’s story is a poignant reminder of the invisible battles some of our heroes fight, even when they bring joy to so many. His legacy in the darts community will always be remembered, celebrating both his triumphs and his struggles.
