Heartbreaking events unfolded at Bondi Beach, Sydney, where a “terrorist” attack disrupted a Jewish celebration, claiming 16 lives. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old, and included a bright young girl, Matilda Poltavchenko, and Holocaust survivor couple Alexander and Larisa Kleytman. Matilda was remembered as “bright, joyful, and spirited” by her family, while Alexander died protecting Larisa during the chaos.

Among the victims is British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was described by his family as a “joyful rabbi.” He had recently celebrated the birth of his youngest child and was at Bondi to spread happiness and light. Reuven Morrison, a refugee who had built a new life in Australia, lost his life while trying to help others. Tributes for Reuven describe him as the “most beautiful, generous man,” adding to the grief felt by both the Melbourne and Sydney Jewish communities.

Remarkably, Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner, courageously tackled one of the attackers, becoming a real-life hero. Despite sustaining bullet wounds, Ahmed’s actions prevented further tragedy, earning him admiration from the local community and government officials.
French national Dan Elkayam, a beloved football club member, and Peter Meagher, a former police officer and rugby enthusiast, were also among the victims. These losses have left a profound impact on multiple communities around the world.
While one gunman was neutralised at the scene, the other, aged 24, is critically injured under police guard and expected to face charges. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless act of violence, and to the injured, many of whom remain hospitalised.
Such tragic events remind us of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Let’s come together to support those affected by this tragedy.
