Tragic Loss on Welsh Roads: Cyclist Nicolette Lewis Fatally Struck

Heartbreaking news: Nicolette Lewis, an accomplished cyclist and enthusiastic member of her local cycling club, tragically lost her life following a collision with an HGV lorry on the A476 near Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire. Just minutes before the accident, her husband had seen her cycling, unaware it would be their final moment together.

The lorry driver, John Evans, is now on trial at Swansea Crown Court, where he denies causing death by careless driving. He contends he was “blinded by the sun” at the time of the incident. Witnesses at the scene recall Evans admitting, “I didn’t see her. The sun was in my eyes,” while seeming visibly shaken.

Despite the efforts of passersby and paramedics responding via Wales Air Ambulance, the 52-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Evans, who had driven for nearly nine hours that day, claimed in his defence that the sun compromised his visibility as he navigated a bend, just moments before the tragic collision. No mechanical issues were found with the lorry, and the trial revealed that the vehicle lacked a working dashcam.
The prosecution argues that Evans’ driving may not have met the standard of a careful and competent driver, raising questions about whether he exercised due care amid the bright, low sun. Jurors are tasked with determining whether these conditions excuse the heartbreaking accident.
Nicolette’s loss has deeply touched her community, where she was admired for her passion and strength in cycling, frequently participating in events like the Cardiff to Tenby ride. Our thoughts are with her loved ones as the trial continues. Stay tuned for updates on this case.
