A college teacher, Mark Robertson, found himself at the centre of controversy after the Education Workforce Council reviewed messages sent to a student. Robertson, who has represented Wales in international culinary competitions, faced scrutiny over an Instagram message where he asked the student to imagine him as “pocket size, like six inches…you can do anything you want with me.” While it might sound questionable, the panel ruled there was no sexual or malicious intent behind the comment.

The context? A conversation about the iconic 2007 Disney film “Ratatouille” in which a small animated chef finds creative ways to assist. However, the message was sent late in the evening, which didn’t help Robertson’s case, and he’d been warned before about contacting students via social media.

Despite the misunderstanding, the committee deemed his actions inappropriate but not sexually motivated. Other classroom behaviours, such as touching a student’s hair and crossing professional boundaries, were found improper and unacceptable.
Robertson expressed deep regret, stating he “felt awful” and is prepared to take any necessary steps to rectify his actions. While a reprimand stays on his record for two years, he remains eligible to teach during this period.
Takeaways? Clear communication and professional boundaries are vital. Here’s hoping for happier future headlines for Mr Robertson.
