We’re deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Lusanda Dumke, a remarkable South African rugby icon, at just 29. Lusanda bravely faced a rare form of gastric cancer, having stepped away from rugby in August to focus on her health.

As the captain of the Izuzu Bulls Daisies and a key player for the Springbok women’s team, she left an indelible mark on the sport. Lusanda led the Daisies to three consecutive Women’s Premier Division titles, including the recent 2025 championship, and earned 33 caps for her country, captaining the national team three times.

Honoured as SA Rugby’s women’s player of the year in 2022, Lusanda was not just a captain but the heartbeat of every team she graced. Her dedication, leadership, and resilience inspired everyone around her. Her legacy will continue to influence the world of women’s rugby in South Africa, defined by her perseverance both on and off the field.
Lusanda’s journey began with the Border Ladies at just 18, and she quickly rose to prominence, marking her international debut against Wales in 2018. She captained her country for the first time against Kenya in 2021 and was part of South Africa’s World Cup squad the following year.
Her strength, humility, and selfless commitment set a standard that will be remembered for years to come. SA rugby president Mark Alexander paid tribute to her saying, “Lusanda will forever be a symbol of courage and leadership.”
Our hearts go out to Lusanda’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time. Her legacy of strength and inspiration will remain with all who had the honour of knowing her. Rest in peace, Lusanda. You will be missed but never forgotten. 🌹💔
