The Welsh Government is stepping up its intervention with the Aneurin Bevan Health Board due to mounting concerns over an £18 million deficit and delays in A&E. Health Secretary Jeremy Miles announced the board will move to level four on a five-point scale to address issues of finance and emergency care.

In a recent address, Mr Miles expressed concerns about the board’s rapidly declining financial state, forecasting a deficit of £18.3 million by March. As a result, he’s pulling back approval for their three-year plan.

Gwent isn’t alone in facing challenges. The Betsi Cadwaladr health board remains at the highest alert level, and others across Wales are seeing varying levels of intervention. Yet, it’s not all bleak news: there’s significant progress in governance at Hywel Dda Health Board, set to be downgraded for governance and leadership.

But there are concerns too. Shadow Health Secretary James Evans raises questions about the effectiveness of these interventions, pointing to Betsi Cadwaladr’s long-term struggle under special measures. Plaid Cymru’s Mabon ap Gwynfor also highlighted “systemic” failures in the NHS, warning that these “exceptional” measures have become the norm.

Mr Miles reassured that the escalation is about providing support, pointing out similar challenges across the UK. However, there’s a clear call for the Welsh Government to address both local mismanagement and broader policy challenges affecting the NHS.

This decision is a major shake-up for the Gwent health board and we’ll be watching closely to see if improvements follow! Stay tuned for more updates! 📢
