A paedophile who captured attention for singing a Coldplay song in a disturbing video, Gareth Davies, has died just months into his prison sentence. The 59-year-old had been serving an 18-month sentence at HMP Parc after being convicted for attempting to engage in sexual communication with whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl. Instead, he had unwittingly interacted with a decoy set up by a paedophile hunter group.

Davies, originally from Swansea, had sent sexually explicit messages and even recorded himself singing Coldplay’s “Yellow,” hoping to impress the fictitious girl. Judge during his trial described him as a “very calculating individual” and deemed him a dangerous offender.

Reports state Davies was receiving palliative care and passed away in hospital on November 27th. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an independent investigation following his death, as is the protocol in such cases.

Davies had denied the sexual nature of his messages, claiming they were innocent and that he was “asexual.” Regardless, his term was cut short before any completion, as he was slated to serve up to half of his sentence in custody before release on licence. His inclusion on the sex offenders register remains part of his sentence.
Mystery still surrounds the exact cause of his death, which awaits a coroner’s determination. The legacy of his actions and the resulting legal repercussions have drawn significant public and judicial attention during his brief time behind bars.
