📢 It’s the end of an era in Carmarthen as Coracle Fish Bar, a beloved local chippy, prepares to serve its final portion of chips in the lead-up to Christmas! 🍟🎄
For over 90 years, this iconic spot on Lammas Street has been filling the bellies of locals with delicious treats. From its humble beginnings as a fruit and veg shop, then a pub, it transformed into a fish and chip haven in the 1940s. The Williams family ran it for decades, and in 1992, it passed into the capable hands of the James family. Now, after 33 years, Neil and Julie are ready to hang up their aprons.
Neil shared, “The cost of living has soared, and it’s just time for us to move on. Our sons have their own lives now, and it’s a mix of emotions as we prepare to say goodbye.”
Known for their unique ‘batch and chips’—a massive chip-stuffed loaf—and quirky offerings like battered Mars bars and Creme Eggs, Coracle Fish Bar has been a culinary beacon in the community. Neil fondly recalls keeping the traditions alive, with the help of a local baker who knew just how they liked their bread!
Prices certainly aren’t what they used to be. Back in 1992, you could snag a fish and chips for under £3! Today, it’s a rare find under £9.
The outpouring of kind words from their loyal customers has touched Neil and Julie deeply. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and generosity. It’s been a great experience, and we’ll miss the fantastic characters who’ve frequented our chippy over the years.”
December 23rd will be an emotional day as the James family fry up their final batch of chips. Neil hopes someone will take over and keep the tradition going. “We’ve shared laughs and memories, and although it’s a bittersweet farewell, we know it’s the right move.”
