⚠️ Important Update for Merthyr Tydfil ⚠️

Our fantastic community safety team is facing serious challenges due to the end of funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund next March. With countless contributions to keeping our streets safe, the potential loss of these essential roles could have a major impact on the community.

👮♂️ Over the past five months, the Merthyr Tydfil Together Initiative, in collaboration with South Wales Police, has resulted in over 100 arrests. Our dedicated team manages everything from anti-social behaviour interventions to manning the vital CCTV network across the town centre and high-traffic areas. They are our eyes and ears, providing a much-needed presence and acting on criminal activity.
🔍 The CCTV team, alongside evening economy officers, are crucial in monitoring public spaces. The funding for these roles is disappearing in March, and without it, maintaining current service levels will be an uphill battle. The civil enforcement officers, pivotal in addressing anti-social behaviour and community issues, also face an uncertain future.
🔑 Local councillors have voiced their concerns, highlighting how crucial these positions are. Cllr Geraint Thomas stressed the “devastating effect” a loss of funding could have, stating that, without these roles, the police would be stretched even thinner. Cllr Lee Davies echoed these concerns, applauding the team as the best in his eight-year tenure.
💬 At the heart of the community’s concerns is the hope that alternative funding will be secured to safeguard these vital roles. As Cllr Declan Sammon assured, efforts are being made to do just that. But the clock is ticking as we approach April, and the community is left hoping for positive news.
Let’s all stay united in support of finding the necessary resources to keep Merthyr Tydfil safe! 🤝
