It’s a bittersweet goodbye for Cardiff as the beloved North Star pub is set to pour its final pint on New Year’s Eve. Nestled at 131 North Road, this cherished local gem has been a hub of camaraderie and good times since opening its doors in August 2020. But the heartache of rising costs and cost-of-living pressures has led to a heart-wrenching decision: the doors will close for good.
For over 135 years, the venue has been a cornerstone of community connection, with its former guises including the Maindy Hotel and The College Tavern. From students to local creative souls, North Star’s welcoming vibe was second to none, with legendary Sunday roasts, lively quiz nights, karaoke, and an undying support for independent music. 🎶
Owner Tom Edwards shared, “This is without question the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make. We’ve explored every possible option to keep North Star going, but in the current climate we feel this is the only responsible choice left to us.”
Manager David Rowlands added, “We’re immensely proud of what this pub has stood for. This place meant something to people — and that’s what hurts the most.”
