⚠️ Heartbreaking Incident in Anglesey: Dog Drives Sheep Into River ⚠️
In a devastating event near the cycle path at Cors Ddyga, a dog, thought to be a cocker spaniel, drove sheep into Anglesey’s fast-flowing Afon Cefni. The tragedy unfolded between 4 and 5pm last Monday, leaving one sheep drowned and another missing. Three other sheep were rescued but remain in critical conditions.
Farmers Michael and Ann Coyne are heartbroken, with Ann sharing, “We couldn’t even retrieve the drowned sheep; it’s drifting with the current.” A witness, who wisely chose not to dive into the dangerous river, alerted authorities and helped track the owners.
One ewe lamb, found with bite wounds, managed to cross to a neighbouring field but remains missing. Ann mentioned, “It’s a shame, especially since they were among our finest stock.”
Sharing footage online, Ann sparked outrage. One viewer described the scene as “disgusting and heartbreaking,” emphasizing the need for dog owners to control their pets. The attack eerily mirrors one from 18 months ago, where the Coyne’s prized pedigree Easy Care sheep were targeted.
The plight of livestock worrying is concerning. Following recent legislation, police now have greater authority to penalise dog owners failing to control their pets around livestock. Offenders face unlimited fines and potentially custodial sentences.
With this fresh law, a dog no longer has to physically harm livestock to be in violation. Authorities encourage reporting such incidents promptly to avoid harsher consequences.
Witnesses spotted a couple fleeing the scene towards Llangefni, leaving chaos behind. Ann urged, “Awareness is vital. Keeping dogs on leads near livestock can prevent unnecessary suffering.”
Let’s all do our part to protect these gentle creatures and support our local farmers. 🐑
