Tragedy at Withernsea: A Rescue Turned Heartbreaking 😢
In a valiant effort to save a 15-year-old girl caught by powerful waves, two brave souls have sadly lost their lives, and another remains missing. The drama unfolded at Central Promenade, Withernsea, when the teenage girl got swept into the turbulent sea near the Pier Towers.
A 67-year-old man, found unconscious in the water, was tragically declared dead on the scene. The authorities later recovered another body, while the search continues for the missing individual. It’s a sobering reminder of the sea’s power.
Paul Whitehead, who runs the Castle Cafe on the promenade, recounted how staff and bystanders desperately tried to help. A brave staff member even threw a life ring to the struggling girl. Despite their efforts, the girl couldn’t hold on amidst the relentless waves. Eyewitness Karen Higgs described the heart-wrenching scene, as shouts to grab the safety ring went unheard.
Emergency services, including the coastguard, RNLI, and local rescue teams, were mobilised promptly. Search efforts continue, although they had to pause due to the hazardous conditions, promising to resume at first light.
Authorities urge the public to keep away from the area to allow rescue teams to work safely. A rescue helicopter, several lifeboats, and a dedicated crew are committed to the search operation. Hornsea Inshore Rescue noted the dire sea conditions hampered their initial efforts.
