Meet Em Louise Walker, a trailblazing tradeswoman from Bristol who’s breaking barriers in the world of painting and decorating. Despite being in a male-dominated industry, Em thrives and inspires with her skills. However, she often encounters some frustrating comments from those not used to seeing women in trades.

Em takes to TikTok as “Em the Tradie” to share the eye-rolling remarks men frequently make. From “Did your boyfriend or dad teach you how to paint?” to the classic, “I thought a bloke would turn up,” Em’s heard it all. She claps back with wit and confidence, proving she’s as capable as any male tradesperson.
Her favourite come-back for when people doubt her abilities? “I’m the boss baby, and I even have my own apprentice so how do you like those apples?” Em turns these encounters into teachable moments, letting everyone know that skills and expertise know no gender.

In response to Em’s experiences, other women in similar fields shared their stories. One woman, a sky engineer, faces assumptions about needing help with a ladder. Another, an electrician, frequently has her qualifications questioned in ways her male counterparts never are. They’re united in the journey to normalise women excelling in all professions.
Em’s story is a reminder of the progress being made, and the stereotypes still left to shatter. Here’s to all the pioneering women in trades, proving every day that they belong and excel in their chosen fields. Keep inspiring and smashing those stereotypes, Em! 💪🎨
