Tragic news has surfaced from the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, where a devastating fire at the Constellation bar claimed the lives of 40 individuals during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Among them was 18-year-old Benjamin Johnson, a brave teenage boxer who tragically lost his life while heroically trying to save a friend.

The fire, which caused injuries to 119 people, was reportedly sparked after champagne bottles with lit sparklers ignited the ceiling, causing the flames to spread rapidly through the venue. Victims of this heartbreaking incident ranged in age from 14 to 39, many of them teenagers who were simply out celebrating the new year.

Benjamin, remembered as a “radiant personality” and a “promising athlete,” was a member of the Lausanne Boxing Club. Tributes are pouring in, with the Swiss Boxing Federation highlighting his selflessness. The organisation’s president shared a heartfelt message, describing Benjamin as someone who always supported his teammates and had a positive, smiling presence.

This young hero’s tragic passing has left many grief-stricken, and the nation mourns his loss deeply. Together with 21 other Swiss citizens, Benjamin’s memory will be honoured during a national day of mourning. Swiss church bells will ring, and a minute’s silence is planned, allowing everyone to reflect on the victims of this profound tragedy.
In addition to Benjamin, Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old Italian international golfer, was also identified among the victims, with the Italian Golf Federation expressing its sorrow over the loss of another young athlete.
Our thoughts go out to all the families and friends affected by this sorrowful event. Let’s remember Benjamin for his courage and kind spirit, and keep all the victims in our hearts during this time of mourning.
