A dramatic scene unfolded at Cardiff’s bustling Capital Shopping Park when 31-year-old Jay Roberts from Canton was spotted brandishing a knife. The unsettling incident, which occurred at the Asda store, left shoppers and children frightened. Roberts carried the knife tucked into his waistband as he entered the store and later revealed it near his car. Although no threats were made, the sight alarmed onlookers.
Quick to act, witnesses snapped photos of Roberts and contacted the police. He was apprehended at his home shortly after. In court, it was revealed that Roberts, who has ADHD and OCD, hadn’t taken his prescribed medication for eight years and was self-medicating with cannabis, which might have contributed to his state of mind.
Despite no aggressive actions, the court deemed the episode severe enough to warrant a custodial sentence due to his past offence of carrying a weapon at age 14. Roberts was sentenced to 12 months, with half of that time to be spent in custody.
Among the court proceedings, Roberts’ defence pointed out his mental health struggles and the paranoia he was experiencing. While the knife has been confiscated, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fears sparked by such public disturbances. The safety of the community remains paramount, and the response to these actions underscores the seriousness of carrying weapons in public.
