⚠️ Important Update for PIP and Disability Benefit Claimants! ⚠️

If you’re claiming Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or other disability benefits, here’s what you need to know: The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been struggling to meet their targets for processing new PIP claims. With only 51% of claims handled within the planned 75 working days in 2024/25, the delays are causing distress, pushing many into debt and poverty.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is sounding the alarm. They reported that some people are stuck in limbo, waiting over a year for their claims to be processed. Simply put, the current service level is “unacceptably poor” and many feel left in the dark.
Efforts to turn things around include a new online application process in certain areas, which has reportedly reduced processing times by about 20 days. However, the new system, expected to be widely available by 2029, is deemed too slow in rolling out.
The PAC is urging the DWP to be more transparent by providing detailed data on waiting times and improving their plans to reduce delays. Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown from the PAC has criticised the DWP’s sluggish progress over the years as simply not good enough. The worry is that without swift action, claimants will continue to face long waits, risking financial hardship.
On a more hopeful note, an ongoing review by Sir Stephen Timms aims to assess the entire PIP system, with a report expected by autumn.
The DWP maintains they’re working to fix the system, redeploying 1,000 work coaches to assist where possible and modernising outdated technology with ambitious reforms. They say they’re focused on helping claimants secure employment while making the benefits system fair and future-proof.
