The funding is meant to uplift one specific area, yet this decision didn’t come easy. Councillors had to choose between other needy areas like Briton Ferry, Neath East, and Sandfields and Aberavon, sparking a debate. It’s not just about money – it’s about justice for these communities!

Cllr Scott Jones expressed frustration, saying the criteria made it tough for some of Wales’ most disadvantaged areas to compete. Deputy leader Cllr Alun Llewelyn added that this initiative doesn’t match up to the European funding we’ve lost, criticising its lack of local collaboration.

The Pride in Place Programme kicked off in 2025, aiming to address local deprivation with targeted funds. Though welcomed, local leaders hope for a future where every community in Neath Port Talbot can thrive without having to compete for necessary resources.
