It all started when Macmillan demanded money from his 82-year-old grandmother, Carol Macmillan. She attempted to leave for her tai chi class, but things took a horrifying turn. Macmillan struck her with a knife and threatened to get a bigger weapon to kill her.

Things escalated further when he forced his way into Katherine Hughes-King’s flat below. With chilling threats and a knife in hand, Macmillan locked the door and launched a vicious attack, leaving Mrs Hughes-King with more than 20 stab wounds. Her brave dog tried to protect her but couldn’t stop the attack.

Neighbours reported hearing “screams of terror,” and it was thanks to the swift response of the police that the attack didn’t escalate further. Both women suffered severe injuries, with Mrs Hughes-King facing the prospect of not surviving her emergency medical transfer due to her injuries. Her heartfelt victim impact statement revealed the lasting trauma she endures, both physically and emotionally.

Macmillan’s defence claimed he was under the misguided belief that the women had stolen money he had allegedly won from gambling. However, there was no evidence to support these claims. His history of depression and substance abuse was also highlighted, but it didn’t lessen the severity of his actions.

Both Detective Constable Catherine Farrington and DCI Simon Kneale commended the bravery of the victims and the decisive actions of the police on the scene. They hope the sentence brings some measure of justice and reassurance to the victims as they begin their long road to recovery.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this challenging time. 🕊️✨
