In a scene straight out of a Western movie, the quiet town of Pembroke Dock was rocked by chaos when a fight broke out on Pembroke Street, culminating in the shocking sight of a samurai sword being brandished in public. Residents looked on in disbelief and fear as Michel Valmont emerged onto the street with the weapon, adding a dramatic twist to an already tense and dangerous situation.

The incident unfolded on a summer afternoon in June 2024, drawing multiple reports to the police about a street brawl. Prosecutors revealed that Valmont, dressed in black, joined the fray, chasing two other men with his weapon. Panic ensued as the public worried about the intentions behind the wielded sword.

When authorities arrived, they arrested the fighting pair, Stephen Charge and Trevor Herridge. A quick search revealed Valmont’s discarded hoodie and sword in a nearby garden, leading to his identification and arrest. Both Valmont, 48, and Charge, 52, admitted guilt to charges of affray. Valmont also faced judgment for possessing an offensive weapon.

To quote Judge Paul Thomas KC, the incident was “more reminiscent of the Wild West” than modern Wales. He expressed concern over the escalation caused by Valmont’s outrageous actions with the sword. Consequently, Valmont received a 15-month prison sentence. Meanwhile, Charge, with offences dating back years, narrowly avoided incarceration with a suspended sentence and a £400 fine.
Interestingly, Jon Tarrant, defending Valmont, painted a picture of a man who momentarily lost his judgment in a misguided attempt to assist a friend. Valmont, who has battled heroin addiction for nearly three decades, acknowledged his lapse and is now reportedly sober.
Emily Bennett, speaking for Charge, confirmed that he overstepped lawful self-defence, but highlighted his journey towards sobriety and his commitment to his children. She expressed his deep regret over the incident.
In closing, the court heard the tragic news that the third involved party, Trevor Herridge, had since passed away. Let’s hope this serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of escalating violence. Stay safe, Pembroke Dock!
