🔍 Urgent Update on Maternal Health: Alarming Rise in Deaths 🏥

The rate of women dying during or shortly after pregnancy has jumped by 20% over the past decade, a shocking increase in a crucial area of women’s health. Despite a previous target to cut these numbers, new research from the University of Oxford shows significant challenges remain.

🔸 Key Causes:
– During pregnancy or up to 6 weeks after, blood clots lead the list of deadly concerns, closely followed by cardiac issues.
– Between 6 weeks and a year post-pregnancy, suicide tragically tops the list, making psychiatric causes account for a third of maternal deaths during this period.
🔸 Widening Inequalities:
– Black women face nearly three times the risk compared to their white counterparts, with Asian women also at heightened risk.
– Age is a factor too, with women over 35 nearly twice as likely to face fatal outcomes compared to those aged 25-29.
– Economic disparities play a role, as women in deprived areas are twice as likely to die than those in less deprived regions.
🔸 System Under Strain:
The Royal College of Midwives warns of unbearable pressure on the maternity system, impacting care quality. Midwives are stretched thin, and the reallocation of £93 million meant for improving maternity services has raised concerns about future outcomes.
🗣️ Calls for Action:
Improved investment in resources and staff is essential to tackle these issues. Unless these are addressed, the chance for preventable harm remains distressingly high.
This story reflects the critical need for changes in support and care during and following pregnancy. It’s time for meaningful steps to ensure safer futures for all mothers. ❤️
