Wrexham defender Tom O’Connor has been hit with a £4,200 fine for placing 16 “naive and stupid” football bets earlier in his career. Admitting his breach of the rules, O’Connor placed these bets between 2017 and 2021, including a few on matches involving his own team. The bets didn’t involve any inside info, and were just small-stake punts made out of boredom, according to O’Connor, and he has since apologised to the FA. The Football Association’s decision avoided a pitch ban, considering it unnecessary, settling instead on a fine and a formal warning.

The bets totalled £147.66 with an overall loss of £73.66—a wake-up call for the defender. O’Connor’s honesty came to light when he admitted to the charges without contest. The punishment is deemed “fair and proportionate,” according to the FA commission.

The Irishman, who made a mark with Wrexham after joining from Burton Albion, has contributed significantly to the club’s remarkable journey with three consecutive promotions. This season, he’s on loan at Peterborough United, aiming to gain more game time in League One.
This betting episode has reached its conclusion as the case is now closed, pending any appeals. It serves as a reminder of the strict rules surrounding player betting in football, ensuring the integrity of the sport remains intact.
Here’s wishing Tom O’Connor a lesson well learned and a promising return to the field! 🏆⚽
