It’s been 15 years since Nerys Evans was last in office, but she’s ready for a comeback! The Plaid Cymru politician is running for the Senedd after playing a crucial role in reshaping the party. Her 2023 report highlighted serious issues within Plaid Cymru, leading to the resignation of Adam Price as leader.
Facing the possibility of not being re-elected, Price was ahead of Evans on the candidate list, but thanks to strong poll numbers, all three hopefuls for Sir Gaerfyrddin, including Evans, are likely to snag seats in the election.
Back in December 2022, Evans chaired a working group to address accusations of harassment and misconduct within the party. Her findings called out a lack of zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and issues with HR practices. She noted, “Inaction over many years from those in power made a bad situation worse.”
With the damning report behind her, Evans commented on Plaid’s transformation and the ongoing work needed within the Senedd. She’s optimistic about the party’s progress and praises the historic gender balance achieved with positive action initiatives within Plaid and Labour.
Evans is candid about the challenges of standing for election, particularly as a woman, and the need for more mothers in politics. With two children, she’s keenly aware of the job’s demands but believes in the importance of women’s voices in politics. “I was finding myself persuading others at every election,” she says, rallying for more mums to stand for election.
Excited about the future and Plaid’s poll performance, she acknowledges the stakes are high. “We’re not complacent. The stakes are really high; we’re facing a very polarised alternative,” she adds.
Evans is determined to make a difference and stands firm in her belief that Plaid Cymru is best for Wales, ready to lead substantial change.
