š From Mountains of Coal to Safe Communities! š§

Coal tips across Wales are a stark reminder of our industrial legacy. While we’re proud of our history, these sites shouldn’t pose any risk to our communities. That’s why the Welsh Government is investing an extra Ā£80 million to secure over 400 former coal tip sites and boost local jobs. This is a big step forward in ensuring that no one feels unsafe in their own home due to our mining past.

Wales bears the brunt of the UK’s coal mining legacy, hosting 40% of all UK coal tipsāand a large portion of the ones that pose safety concerns. With climate change and extreme weather becoming all too common, it’s crucial we act now.
Building on our global-leading efforts, we’re not only tackling these potential hazards but also creating job opportunities along the way. More than Ā£230 million has been earmarked for coal tip safety, with support from both the Welsh and UK Labour Governments. This means quicker progress and expanded efforts to transform these sites into safe spaces.
Last year, the Disused Mine and Quarry Tips (Wales) Act was introducedāthe first of its kind in the UKāaddressing the safety challenges from our mining history. A new Disused Tips Authority for Wales will be set up in Merthyr Tydfil, creating around 60 jobs focused on ensuring these sites are stable.
We’re also offering apprenticeships and education to prepare a skilled workforce for coal tip safety in the future. In stark contrast, Reform UK aims to step backwards, posing risks to coalfield communities long affected by industry aftershocks.
We’re committed to righting historical wrongs, working alongside councils and partners to give our communities peace of mind and transform our mining past into valuable assets. With safer tips, we can repurpose land for housing, business, and recreation, unlocking economic potential for these local areas.
Our heritage once powered Britain, and today we’re ensuring it powers a safer, brighter future for everyone in Wales! š”šŖ
