Residents of a small village in Caerphilly County are living through what they describe as an “endless nightmare” due to continuous quarry operations at Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm. For 20 years, locals have complained about the disruptive noise, persistent dust, and overpowering odours affecting their daily lives. With the latest planning permission granted, the quarry will continue its operations until 2026 and its restoration work until 2034, despite strong opposition from the community.
James Vukashin, a local resident, voiced the collective frustration of his neighbours, detailing how villagers have been driven to tears by their living conditions. “Our children are coughing, we can’t open our windows, and our homes shake from the blasts,” he shared. This situation has become not just a matter of convenience, but a health and well-being issue for the community. Councillor Ann Gair described the situation as a relentless horror of constant machinery noise, dust, and thundering lorries. Fellow councillor Haydn Pritchard echoed this sentiment, urging authorities to prioritise residents’ health and safety.
Across the county line, Merthyr Tydfil councillor Michelle Symonds also raised concerns for Trelewis residents, pointing out how the quarry has expanded incrementally without much scrutiny. Despite these worries, the Bryn Group, which operates the quarry, insists that they are committed to maintaining good relationships with residents and have pledged to continue monitoring dust levels, which they claim are within national limits.
While the quarry provides essential materials for national infrastructure, the disruption it causes is undeniable.
