Exciting times ahead for Wetherspoon fans! The popular pub chain announced plans to open 15 new locations this financial year, including six that have already opened in hotspots like London Bridge station, Paddington, and Basildon. Plus, they’re going international with their first pub in mainland Spain at Alicante Airport! 🌎✈️
Despite these exciting developments, Wetherspoon is experiencing some financial challenges. The group revealed a forecasted dip in annual profits due to a whopping £45 million surge in costs, fueled by increased energy bills, wages, and business rates. 📉
But it’s not all doom and gloom! Sales are climbing, especially over the festive period, where they saw an 8.8% increase in just three weeks! Overall, sales are up 6.1%, providing a much-needed boost. 📈🎉
In a bid to balance the books, they’ve sold six pubs this year, resulting in a net cash inflow of £3.3 million. The managed trading estate now boasts 794 pubs. And there’s more to look forward to as 10-15 new franchised pubs are expected by year’s end.
Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin remains optimistic, stating, “We’re pleased with our sales growth and the momentum gained in the second quarter. If this continues, we foresee the year’s outcome being slightly below last year’s.”
