Imagine having a crunchy snack and then facing a year of gut-wrenching consequences! That’s exactly what happened to Ruanda Davis, who, after enjoying a bag of pork scratchings, found herself in a year-long battle with severe diarrhoea. 🚫💥
In June 2021, after munching on Mr Porky pork scratchings, 64-year-old Ruanda from Cardiff experienced violent gastric symptoms, later discovered to be caused by salmonella. She collapsed, sustaining a head injury, which led to a five-day hospital stint for severe dehydration. Ruanda says, “I’ve never been so ill in my life, and it’s left lasting effects on my health and confidence.”
What started as a simple snack turned into a collective nightmare for more than 100 people across the UK. 😰 The infamous Mr Porky treats, produced by Tayto Group in Bolton, were linked to a widespread outbreak affecting dozens. After a court case, Tayto admitted to selling unsafe food and promised to learn from the incident, while victims received a settlement of over £300,000 in compensation.
The ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the serious impact contaminated food can have. Ruanda hopes sharing her story will drive food manufacturers to ensure their products are safe, saying, “I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through what I did.”
