A surprising drop in birth rates is shaking up the educational landscape in a Welsh county, leading to potential school closures. 📉 Caerphilly is seeing a sharp decline in the number of births—from 2,000 to just 1,400 annually over the last decade! This means fewer pupils are entering the primary school system, resulting in empty seats and budget dilemmas for local schools.
Just last summer, Rhydri Primary School in Rudry had to shut its doors, following the closure of Cwm Glas Infants School in Llanbradach the previous year. 🏫 These closures stirred quite a debate, with many residents urging the council to find ways to keep schools open.
In response, the Caerphilly County Borough Council is taking action! This week, they backed a new working group to tackle the issue and come up with solutions. The group will consist of council members, school heads, and local representatives. Their goal? To ensure the schools are modern, efficient, and fit for future generations.
Plans to build new schools are currently on hold until this working group makes its recommendations. 🏗️ Some funds initially set aside for a new campus in Rhymney are now being redirected to crucial road repairs instead.
