A terrifying moment for a mum as her two-year-old son was discovered in a nursery’s grit bin after going missing at Maybury Primary School. The little boy was found cold and disoriented, but luckily, he was safe just before the police arrived. The mum was understandably upset, recounting how she feared the worst upon finding him curled up in the bin.

She mentioned he wasn’t himself afterwards, and he had to be taken to the hospital due to elevated salt levels. Fortunately, he was soon discharged with no serious harm. Despite returning briefly to the nursery, she decided to keep him home, feeling her trust shattered beyond repair.

The nursery staff couldn’t explain how he went missing for nearly an hour, and their incident report didn’t add up, leaving the mum frustrated and unanswered. She was further shocked to learn that a safety measure for her son had been discontinued without her approval.
Following the incident, urgent improvements were made, including increased staffing and securing the grit bin. CCTV issues were also addressed, ensuring such a mishap doesn’t repeat.
The Council Leader expressed her shock and extended her apologies to the family, ensuring them and the public that the incident is under thorough review to uphold child safety standards. The Care Inspectorate was also informed to make certain that safe, quality care is a top priority for all children.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the constant vigilance needed in childcare settings to prevent potentially dangerous situations. Hoping for nothing but recovery and reassurance for the family involved.
