A new report has revealed that air quality across several regions is still alarmingly low, affecting health and productivity. Up to 1,400 premature deaths occur every year in Wales due to air pollution, with costs soaring to an estimated £1bn per year in lost workdays. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is sounding the alarm, urging immediate climate action to revive the environment.
The report sheds light on pressing issues, including dangerous nitrogen emissions from agriculture harming both habitats and public health. With Wales being one of the most nature-depleted countries globally, almost 1 in 5 species are at risk of extinction. It’s a situation that requires urgent intervention to protect our ecosystem’s future resilience.
Despite some progress, air quality improvement in Wales remains insufficient. The Deputy First Minister emphasises the need for stronger collective action to tackle pollution and build sustainable resilience against climate change. The Welsh Government is set to lead efforts alongside public sector partners, businesses, and communities.
