Meet Morgan Ridler, a brave little boy from Swansea who tragically passed away just before his fourth birthday in June 2023. Diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at only two years old, Morgan spent his final days at Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in Sully, where his family found immense support and comfort. His mum, Natalie, shares why choosing hospice care made a world of difference for their family during such a heartbreaking time.
Natalie describes hospice care as crucial for families in their most challenging moments, providing dignified and compassionate end-of-life care. The Ridler family recalls stepping into Tŷ Hafan, where they felt welcomed and understood, with staff catering to their individual needs. Morgan’s room was filled with his favourite things, ensuring his final days were as peaceful as possible.
However, there are growing concerns about the future of hospices in Wales. Rising costs and funding challenges threaten their ability to provide essential care. Hospices currently rely heavily on charitable donations, with only about 30% of their costs covered by the government. This unsustainable model puts these vital services at risk.
Following Morgan’s passing, his family created “Morgan’s Army” to support other families affected by childhood cancer. They advocate for hospice care, emphasising its critical role in offering solace and specialised care for terminally ill children.
