🚨 Beware of AI Scams! 🚨

Criminals are getting sneakier, using AI to clone people’s voices over the phone and set up fraudulent direct debits. Initially, they trick victims with harmless-sounding “lifestyle surveys” to gather personal details. Then, with this info, they create voice clones to authorise payments without the victim’s knowledge. 😨

National Trading Standards (NTS) reports an alarming rise in such scams, targeting especially the elderly. Shockingly, UK adults average about seven scam calls or texts monthly, with many receiving them daily! 📞
NTS has been on the front line, blocking nearly 21 million scam calls and disabling 2,000 numbers in just six months. But with technology on their side, these fraudsters are more sophisticated than ever. As Louise Baxter from NTS points out, this is more than nuisance calls—it’s an organised effort targeting the most vulnerable.
John Herriman from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute warns that AI-driven fraud is making it harder to differentiate genuine calls from fakes. Despite the ongoing work to stop these operations, public vigilance is crucial. Stay alert and share this info with friends and family. 🗣️
Here’s how to protect yourself:
– Be cautious of any unexpected calls; hang up if in doubt. Legitimate callers understand your caution.
– Regularly check bank statements for suspicious transactions. If you spot anything unusual, contact your bank immediately.
– Report scams to the authorities and register with the Telephone Preference Service to reduce unwanted calls.
Let’s stay safe and informed together! 💪
